It's simply too flawed a game, and I've only ever played the 'new and improved' PC port.īut I love it. These are headaches I don't expect the average gamer to deal with! It's just too much unless you're a real dedicated jRPGer (like meeeee). One of the choices for character path progression (I want to say Balanced?) doesn't even do anything, it just defaults to Physical. Anytime you do ANYTHING, you're treated to five people complaining at you on the world map about how they really want for their weapons, even if you've already promised you'll find them twenty times already. Certain hard-to-find enemies involve entering a dungeon, running to the very heart in hopes that it spawned, then, if it didn't (and some spawn rates are very low), running all the way out, then reentering. Leveling up before you have your exact 18 generals is highly detrimental. There are lots (I want to say dozens) of permanently missable quests (some of which are very important, such as the one to unlock the Super Final End Optional Dungeon Of Weapon Grinding). The average gamer wouldn't have the patience to deal with all the little (and big) things this game does hopelessly wrong. Oh, don't get me wrong - having put over 250 hours into TLR (PC version), I get right where you're coming from!īut I don't think the average gamer would.
It's in my top ten all time favorite games - but it's a stupid, frustrating, hair-gripping game full of horrible, horrible design flaws. I actually really enjoyed it, but, well - YMMV!įinally, one of my favorite games (but one I do NOT recommend because it's a buggy, hellish ordeal to play), The Last Remnant employs a system like this for both stats and skills. There are a lot of people who didn't like it at all. Physically run around the world, your agility goes up.
Attack a bunch and your attack and HP go up. If you're really feeling courageous, Quest 64 also employs a similar system. They're both games for the original Game Boy, so don't set your standards too high, but they were fun growing up! They aren't "real" Final Fantasy games (they're from the SaGa series), but they both feature non-experience-point based leveling systems. If you're into classic/retro games, I recommend Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2. All 18+ content (such as art) must have a NSFW tag.Ĭlick here to read our rules in more detail!
